“We can’t change what happened, but we can change what happens next”

we are thrilled to share the latest updates from the Rebuilding Hope project, an initiative powered by the collaboration of three dedicated partners: the Centre for Adolescent Reproductive Health (CEFARH), Applied Science and Technology Laboratories (ASAT-LABs), and Community Focus International (CFI). This project is dedicated to addressing the pressing mental health needs of children, youth, and caretakers in Northern Uganda, particularly those affected by the traumatic events of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) conflict and the daily pressures of life.

The theme this year is: “We can’t change what happened, but we can change what happens next.”

Key Activities and Achievements

  1. Community Awareness and Engagement
    • Objective: To educate the community, especially caretakers, on recognizing early signs of mental illness and understanding referral pathways for timely treatment.
    • Approach: We conducted community engagement sessions in March, using drama to effectively communicate the causes, symptoms, and effects of mental health issues. Local health professionals also reassured the community about the treatability of mental illnesses.
  2. Youth Engagement Through Sports
    • Objective: To raise awareness about mental health among youth and encourage healthy lifestyles.
    • Approach: On April 14th, CEFARH, ASAT-LABs and CFI organized a series of activities including traditional dance, drama performances, and a football match. These activities highlighted the impact of mental health issues and promoted social interaction as a means to combat isolation and substance abuse. The event concluded with a friendly football match, emphasizing the importance of physical activity in mental well-being.
  3. Capacity Building for Staff
    • Objective: To enhance the knowledge and practical skills of our staff in addressing mental health issues in children.
    • Approach: A two-day training session was held on May 31st and June 1st in Gulu, attended by representatives from CEFARH, ASAT-LABs, and CFI. The training focused on identifying and referring mental health cases, fostering collaboration among organizations, and improving overall service delivery.

Challenges and Learnings

While the project has made significant strides, we faced several challenges:

  • Community Expectations: Many community members expect financial incentives for participation, which hinders engagement.
  • Time Management: Scheduling conflicts, particularly during farming seasons, affect attendance.
  • Limited Funding: Financial constraints limit our ability to fully prepare and execute activities.

Moving Forward

To sustain and expand our impact, we need your support. Adequate funding is crucial for organizing community programs, enhancing training sessions, and ensuring timely implementation. We also aim to educate communities about the value of knowledge over monetary incentives.
